What should you know about a TENS unit on the forehead?

TENS sends mild electrical pulses through adhesive electrodes on the skin to influence pain signals. The forehead is close to the eyes, temples and brain, so a placement intended for a shoulder, back or limb cannot simply be copied there. A tingling sensation does not confirm that the placement is suitable. Headache or facial pain may also have causes that need examination rather than electrical stimulation.

Pause use on the forehead and check the device instructions. Ask a physiotherapist or doctor to assess the pain and show you an approved placement, if TENS is appropriate. Never place electrodes over the eyes, across the front or sides of the neck, on broken or irritated skin, or near implanted electronic devices unless your clinician specifically directs this. Keep the unit switched off while moving electrodes, and stop if you feel burning, worsening pain, dizziness, visual changes or unusual discomfort.

Seek urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, a new vision problem, seizure, fever with a stiff neck, or headache after a significant injury. Arrange a clinical review for repeated headaches, facial pain, or symptoms that are changing or interfering with daily activities.

Ask what may be causing the pain, whether TENS has a role, which body site is approved for electrodes, and what symptoms should make you stop treatment. Bring the device or a photograph of its settings so the clinician can check how it is being used.
