What should you know about TENS units for trigger points?

Short answer

A TENS unit may reduce pain felt around a trigger point, but it does not release the tight tissue or confirm that a tender spot is the true cause of your symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Trigger points and electrical stimulation

A trigger point is a tender area within a muscle that may hurt when pressed and can sometimes send discomfort to a nearby region. TENS delivers a tingling through skin electrodes and may change how pain signals are processed. That temporary change can help you move, but it is different from treating the muscle's load, posture, sleep, stress, or joint factors.

Not every tender knot is a trigger point. Persistent focal pain can also reflect a tendon, joint, nerve, or muscle injury, so repeated self-treatment should not replace an examination when symptoms do not settle.

A cautious approach

Use the device exactly as directed, beginning with a comfortable intensity. Place pads on intact skin around the painful muscle rather than directly over a wound, and keep electrodes away from the front of the neck, head, chest, and areas with poor sensation. Do not use the unit while sleeping, driving, bathing, or exercising unless a clinician has given specific instructions.

Pair comfort with gradual movement and activity changes rather than pressing hard on the tender area. A physiotherapist can assess movement and show suitable strengthening, mobility work, manual techniques, or pad placement. Stop if you feel burning, a rash, sharp pain, dizziness, or new symptoms.

When to arrange an assessment

Arrange medical review if pain follows trauma, causes marked weakness, spreads with numbness, or is accompanied by fever, visible swelling, or loss of normal function. Seek urgent care for chest pain, breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, or severe symptoms. A TENS session should never postpone evaluation of a possible injury or nerve problem.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether the tender area fits a trigger-point pattern, where electrodes should sit, whether your skin and sensation are suitable for TENS, and which exercises can address the contributing load. Ask how long to try it and what finding would mean the diagnosis needs reconsideration.

Questions people ask

Can TENS remove a trigger point?

It may ease pain temporarily, but it does not prove the spot is a trigger point or correct contributing muscle and movement factors.

Can I place a pad directly on the most tender spot?

Follow the device instructions and obtain clinician guidance; pads are generally positioned around the painful muscle on intact skin.
