What should you know about temporal lobe epilepsy?

Short answer

Temporal lobe epilepsy causes repeated seizures that begin in the brain's temporal lobe and may alter awareness, memory, emotions, or sensations.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it can feel like

An episode may start with a warning such as a rising feeling in the stomach, an unusual smell or taste, sudden fear, or a strong sense that a moment is familiar. Awareness can then become reduced. A person may stare, stop responding, chew, swallow, pick at clothing, or make other repeated movements without knowing why. Confusion and tiredness can follow, and memory of the event may be incomplete. Some seizures spread and cause stiffening or jerking of the whole body, but this does not happen in every temporal lobe seizure.

The temporal lobes help process memory, language, emotions, and sound. The experience therefore varies between people and may be mistaken for anxiety, daydreaming, or a faint. A repeated, sudden, similar pattern deserves medical assessment.

What to do next

Keep a brief episode record: the time, warning sensation, changes in responsiveness, movements, length, recovery, missed medicines, sleep loss, illness, or alcohol exposure. If safe, a witness can describe what happened or record it for the clinician. During an episode, move nearby hazards away, cushion the head, loosen tight clothing, and turn the person on their side once movements stop. Do not restrain them or put anything in their mouth.

Arrange a GP consultation for repeated or unexplained episodes. Assessment may include a detailed history, examination, and referral for tests such as brain-wave recording or imaging when appropriate. Do not stop a prescribed seizure medicine without medical advice.

When urgent help is needed

Seek emergency help if a seizure lasts longer than expected, another seizure begins before recovery, the person has trouble breathing, is seriously injured, or the event happens in water. Urgent assessment is also needed after a first suspected seizure, during pregnancy, or when recovery is unusually slow. Stay with the person, note the timing, and follow local emergency guidance.

Questions for your doctor

Could these episodes be temporal lobe seizures or another problem? What details should a witness record? Do I need an EEG, brain scan, or specialist referral? Which activities need temporary safety changes? What should family or colleagues do if an episode occurs?

Questions people ask

Can someone talk during a temporal lobe seizure?

They may produce words or sounds, but responses can be confused, delayed, or absent, and memory afterward may be poor.

Should a person be held still during a seizure?

No. Protect them from nearby hazards, cushion the head, and avoid restraint or placing objects in the mouth.
