What should you know about telephone hearing test?

A phone-based check may ask you to repeat words, respond to sounds, or describe how clearly you hear. Results can be affected by the phone, background noise, the speaker’s voice, your attention, and the listening environment. A phone check does not examine the ear canal or measure hearing across different pitches and loudness levels in a controlled setting.

Hearing changes can have different causes. Earwax buildup may block sound, while Meniere's Disease can occur with hearing changes, ringing, or balance symptoms. These possibilities cannot be separated reliably by a telephone check alone.

Take the call in a quiet room and use the device you normally use for calls. Follow the instructions without guessing, and mention whether one or both ears are affected, when the change began, and whether you have ringing, ear pain, discharge, dizziness, or recent loud-noise exposure. Arrange a formal assessment if hearing difficulty persists, affects conversations, or the screening result is unclear.

Seek prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, new facial weakness, significant ear pain, blood or fluid from the ear, or symptoms after a head injury. A telephone screen should not delay urgent evaluation. New or worsening hearing difficulty also deserves clinical review because the cause may need examination or treatment.

Ask whether you need a formal hearing assessment, an ear examination, or a referral to an audiology or ear specialist. Ask what the result means, whether earwax or medicines could affect hearing, and which changes should lead you to seek quicker care.
