What should you know about teenage dandruff?

Dandruff is scaling from the scalp. It can look like white or yellow flakes on hair and clothing, with itch or mild irritation. Seborrheic Dermatitis is a related inflammatory condition that may also affect oily areas such as the eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose.

Dandruff is not a sign that someone is dirty, and it does not spread from person to person. Sweat, oil, stress, weather changes, and infrequent washing may make flakes more noticeable, while scratching can break the skin.

Use a Medicated Shampoo Treatment according to its label or your clinician's instructions. Work it onto the scalp, allow the recommended contact time, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid scraping flakes off and keep nails short if scratching is difficult to control.

If scaling remains active, a clinician may recommend Topical Antifungal Treatment or a different shampoo. Keep a note of which products help, and mention hair dyes, oils, or styling products that seem to trigger irritation.
