Is the Tdap vaccine live attenuated?

A live attenuated vaccine contains a weakened form of a microorganism. Tdap does not contain live tetanus, diphtheria or pertussis organisms. Instead, its non-live components teach the immune system to recognise harmful features linked with these infections. This is different from live vaccines used for some illnesses, such as chickenpox, measles, mumps, rubella or yellow fever. Vaccine type matters when a person is pregnant or has a condition affecting immunity, so the product name should be checked.

Tell the vaccinator about pregnancy, immune-system conditions, medicines and previous vaccine reactions. Do not postpone recommended protection because you have heard the word live used for another vaccine. Ask the clinician to review your record and explain why Tdap is being offered. Mild arm soreness, tiredness or a low fever may follow the injection and usually settles with simple care.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth or throat, widespread hives, fainting or severe weakness after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a fever that concerns you, worsening symptoms or a reaction that does not settle. If vaccination is being considered after a dirty wound, seek prompt assessment rather than waiting for symptoms.

Ask whether your planned vaccine is Tdap or a different product, whether any live vaccine is also due, and how pregnancy or immune treatment affects timing. Confirm which dose should be recorded for future care.
