TCA CROSS Treatment: What to Know Before and After

Short answer

Before TCA CROSS, expect a skin assessment and a plan for treating individual scars; afterward, pinpoint crusts and colour changes can occur as the treated areas heal.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What TCA CROSS means

TCA CROSS uses carefully placed trichloroacetic acid in selected depressed acne scars rather than spreading a peel over the whole face. The chemical stimulates a controlled injury inside each scar, which can encourage new collagen during healing. It is most often discussed for narrow, deep scars; broad rolling scars may need a different approach or a combination plan.

Immediately afterward, treated points may look frosted, swollen or darker. A small crust can form and then shed. Redness or brown colour can last beyond the crust, especially in skin that tends to pigment after inflammation. Improvement is gradual, and a clinician may recommend more than one session after the skin has recovered.

Before and aftercare

Before treatment, tell the clinician about active acne, eczema, cold sores, recent tanning, medicines, and any history of raised scars or dark marks after skin injury. Follow the clinic’s instructions about products and sun exposure; do not apply TCA yourself.

After treatment, keep the points clean and follow the prescribed dressing or ointment routine. Do not pick crusts, scrub the area, or restart strong exfoliants until advised. Protect the skin from sunlight with shade and the recommended sunscreen once the surface has healed. Contact the treating clinician before using makeup or active ingredients on open or crusted skin.

When to seek care

Ask for prompt medical advice if pain, swelling, warmth, redness or discharge is increasing rather than settling, or if blisters, spreading irritation or fever develops. Seek urgent care for facial swelling affecting breathing or vision. A colour change that persists, a scar that becomes raised, or healing that seems stalled also deserves review by the treating clinician.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which scar types are suitable, whether active acne should be treated first, how your skin tone may affect pigment changes, what aftercare products to use, and when the next assessment should happen. You can also ask how TCA CROSS fits with other scar treatments and what signs would mean you should stop a product.

Questions people ask

Can I peel or pick the treated points?

No. Picking or scrubbing can disrupt healing and increase irritation or pigment change; follow the clinician’s wound-care instructions.

Will TCA CROSS treat every acne scar?

No. It is selected for particular depressed scars, while other scar shapes may need different or combined treatments.
