TCA CROSS procedure: how it is performed

The clinician cleans the skin, identifies suitable scar openings, and places a small amount of solution into each target with a fine applicator. The technique is focal: it is intended for individual deep or narrow depressions rather than an even peel across the entire face.

A brief stinging sensation, whitening at the application point, redness, and later crusting can occur. The chemical injury stimulates a repair response beneath the scar. It cannot erase every scar, and broad shallow texture may need a different or combined strategy.

Bring a list of skincare products, medicines, allergies, previous procedures, and conditions that affect healing or pigmentation. Tell the clinician about active acne, eczema, cold sores, recent tanning, and any tendency to form raised scars. Arrive with clean skin if instructed and plan to follow the supplied aftercare.

Ask which scars are suitable, whether numbing is needed, how many visits might be considered, and how the interval will be chosen. Discuss expected redness, crusting, colour change, and alternatives before consenting. Treatment should be performed by a qualified professional familiar with chemical reconstruction of scars.

After the procedure, seek advice for worsening pain, spreading redness, increasing warmth, marked swelling, blisters, pus, fever, or delayed wound closure. Treatment close to the eyes needs urgent attention if there is eye pain, light sensitivity, or altered vision.

Ask what the solution is, how it will be placed, which scars are being targeted, and what signs show normal healing. Confirm sun protection, product restrictions, follow-up timing, and what will happen if pigmentation or an unexpected reaction develops.
