What are targetable mutations in lung cancer?

Cancer cells can acquire gene changes that affect growth, repair, or signalling. A targetable change may provide a treatment route, but the result does not describe your inherited traits or prove that a relative will develop cancer. It also does not mean a targeted medicine will be suitable in every situation.

Testing may use a tumour biopsy, blood sample, or both. The report can identify a driver alteration, show that no actionable change was found, or be inconclusive because the sample is too small. Ask the oncology team which gene or biomarker was found, whether it is confirmed, and whether a matched medicine is available for your lung cancer type and stage. The team will also consider symptoms, previous treatments, other illnesses, and medicines. A targeted option may be used alone or alongside another treatment.

Do not delay urgent symptom care while waiting for profiling. Report new neurological symptoms, worsening breathlessness, chest pain, or a persistent change in voice. Treatment plans can include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or supportive care depending on the whole clinical picture.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, coughing blood, new weakness on one side, a seizure, sudden confusion, or a severe headache. Tell your oncology team promptly about fever, worsening cough, a new rash, diarrhoea, or other symptoms after starting a targeted medicine.

Ask what was tested, whether the sample was adequate, and how the finding changes your options. Ask how response will be monitored, which side effects need urgent attention, and whether [Lung Cancer](/conditions/lung-cancer/) has spread to areas such as the brain.
