Tan peeling off with white spots: what to know

Sun exposure darkens surrounding skin, so lighter patches may stand out as the tan fades. Flaking can follow a sunburn, dryness, friction, or use of irritating products. A fungal rash or another inflammatory skin problem can also produce pale, scaly areas. The pattern matters: note whether spots are smooth or scaly, itchy or tender, sharply outlined or blending into nearby skin, and whether they began before the tan.

White-looking areas are not automatically a sign of serious disease. A clinician can examine the surface and, when needed, use a light or skin sample to distinguish pigment change from infection or inflammation. Avoid assuming that a new product or tanning session is the only cause.

Stop tanning until the skin has settled. Use shade, clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin, and reapply as directed on the product label. Wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser; apply a plain moisturiser while the skin is damp. Let flakes shed naturally rather than scrubbing, peeling, or using bleaching agents.

Do not start steroid, antifungal, or lightening treatment without an assessment when the diagnosis is unclear. Take a dated photograph in consistent lighting so you can tell whether the contrast is changing. Seek prompt medical care for blistering, spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, fever, severe pain, or eye involvement after sun exposure. Arrange a routine dermatology assessment when the pale spots keep spreading, remain scaly after the peeling stops, recur, or develop altered sensation.
