What Should You Know About Tampon Shock Syndrome?

Short answer
Tampon shock syndrome is a rare but serious illness caused by toxins from certain bacteria, and it needs urgent medical assessment when sudden fever and severe symptoms occur.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Medical name
- Toxic shock syndrome (TSS)
- Action if suspected
- Remove the product and seek urgent medical care
- Key warning
- Sudden systemic symptoms can worsen quickly
What tampon shock syndrome means
The medical name is toxic shock syndrome, or TSS. It can happen when toxins made by bacteria enter the bloodstream and trigger a rapid, body-wide reaction. Tampon use has been associated with some cases, but TSS can also occur with other infections, wounds, or menstrual products. It is not caused by the tampon material alone.
Warning signs can include a sudden high fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, dizziness or fainting, confusion, muscle aches, a severe headache, or a widespread rash that may resemble sunburn. Skin peeling can appear later. Symptoms may worsen quickly, so do not wait for every sign to appear.
What to do if you are concerned
Remove the tampon or menstrual cup if one is in place, and seek urgent medical care. Tell the clinician which menstrual product you were using, when it was inserted, and when your symptoms began. Do not insert another tampon while you are unwell, and do not rely on home treatment if you have sudden fever, faintness, confusion, or severe vomiting.
In hospital, clinicians may examine you, look for the source of infection, give fluids and antibiotics, and monitor organs such as the kidneys and liver. Treatment depends on your symptoms and examination findings. Antibiotics are not a substitute for urgent assessment when TSS is suspected.
When to seek care
Seek emergency care now for sudden fever during or soon after tampon use, especially with fainting, severe weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, a widespread rash, or symptoms that are getting worse quickly. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or confused; ask someone to help or contact emergency services.
A fever or flu-like illness during menstruation can have many causes, and a symptom by itself does not establish TSS. The urgency comes from the combination of abrupt systemic symptoms and the possibility of rapid deterioration, not from tampon use alone.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: Could another infection explain these symptoms? Should I avoid tampons or menstrual cups for now? When is it safe to use them again? Which warning signs mean I should return immediately? If antibiotics are prescribed, what should I do if symptoms do not improve?

Questions people ask
Can toxic shock syndrome happen without a tampon?
Yes. TSS can be linked to other bacterial infections, wounds, or menstrual products, so tampon use is not required for it to occur.
Should I remove a tampon if I suddenly feel very unwell?
Yes, remove it and seek urgent medical assessment, particularly if you have sudden fever, faintness, confusion, vomiting, or a widespread rash.
Can I prevent tampon-related toxic shock syndrome?
Follow the product instructions, use the lowest absorbency that manages your flow, change tampons regularly, and alternate with pads when suitable. Never leave a tampon in longer than the instructions allow.
