What should you know about talus hairline fracture?

Short answer
A talus hairline fracture is a small crack in the ankle bone that may worsen with continued weight-bearing and needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
The talus connects the leg to the foot and helps transfer body weight through the ankle. A hairline fracture, also called a stress or fatigue fracture, can develop after repeated loading, a change in training, or an injury. Pain may be deep around the ankle or foot and can increase during walking. Swelling, tenderness, or limping may occur, although symptoms can be subtle early on. A clinician may examine the area and choose imaging; an early scan may not show every small crack.
What to do now
Stop running, jumping, and other activities that reproduce pain until you have been assessed. Keep weight off the foot if walking is painful, using support only as advised. Elevation and a wrapped cold pack may help swelling. Do not use pain relief to push through activity. Follow any immobilisation or protected-weight-bearing plan closely. Your clinician may also review bone health, including possible Vitamin D Deficiency, and discuss Vitamin D Supplementation when appropriate.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical care for persistent ankle or foot pain, worsening pain, or a new limp. Seek urgent help if the foot becomes numb, pale, cold, visibly deformed, or suddenly much more swollen, or if you cannot bear weight after an injury. Do not wait for symptoms to settle if pain is severe or rapidly increasing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which imaging is appropriate, whether you should use crutches or a boot, and when weight-bearing can progress. Ask how activity should return and whether another cause of bone weakness needs checking.

Questions people ask
Can you walk with a talus hairline fracture?
Walking may be possible, but pain or a limp means the foot should be protected and assessed rather than repeatedly loaded.
Can an early X-ray miss a hairline fracture?
Yes. Small stress cracks may need follow-up assessment or different imaging when symptoms persist.
