What should you know about TAH with bilateral salpingectomy?

TAH means total abdominal hysterectomy: the uterus and cervix are removed through an abdominal incision. Bilateral salpingectomy means both fallopian tubes are removed. The ovaries may be left in place or removed separately, so the operative plan should state this clearly.

After the uterus is removed, pregnancy cannot be carried. Removing the tubes also means eggs cannot travel through them. The operation may be recommended for a gynaecological condition or as part of another planned procedure; it is not the same as a simple tube operation.

Before surgery, ask which organs will be removed, the planned incision, alternatives, pain-control plan, and expected restrictions. Arrange help with meals, lifting, transport, and childcare during early recovery. Follow instructions about wound care, medicines, bathing, walking, and returning to work or sexual activity.

Attend follow-up even when the incision looks healed. The team can review pathology, bleeding or discharge, bowel and bladder changes, and whether hormone symptoms could relate to ovarian surgery if the ovaries were also removed.

Contact the surgical team urgently for fever, worsening abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, a red or opening wound, inability to pass urine, or repeated vomiting. Emergency help is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or a painful swollen leg, which can signal a serious postoperative problem.

Ask whether the ovaries will remain, why the tubes are being removed, how the incision will be closed, what activity limits apply, and which symptoms require immediate contact.
