T8–T9 spinal cord compression: what to know

T8 and T9 are vertebrae in the middle part of the back. A tumour, weakened bone, bleeding or another process can narrow the space around the spinal cord. In people with cancer, malignant spinal cord compression may occur when cancer involves the spine; multiple myeloma is one condition doctors may consider, but symptoms can have other causes too. MRI or another scan helps locate the pressure and guide treatment.

Symptoms below this region may include a band-like pain around the chest or abdomen, back pain, heaviness in the legs, altered sensation, difficulty walking, or changes in bladder and bowel control. Tell your oncology team immediately about new back pain, leg heaviness, tingling, weakness, walking difficulty or a change in bladder or bowel function. Keep a note of when symptoms began and whether they are progressing. Assessment may include a neurological examination and urgent imaging. Go to an emergency department now for new or worsening leg weakness, inability to walk safely, numbness around the inner thighs or buttocks, loss of bladder or bowel control, or inability to pass urine. Do not wait for a routine appointment. These red flags can indicate worsening pressure on the spinal cord and require rapid assessment, even if the pain is manageable.
