What should you know about T3 blood tests?

T3 is one of the hormones made by the thyroid and is involved in regulating how the body uses energy. A clinician may request it when an overactive thyroid is suspected, when other thyroid results do not fit the symptoms, or when treatment needs review. A result outside the laboratory range does not diagnose a condition on its own. Medicines, pregnancy, acute illness and some supplements can influence thyroid results, so share a complete list with the person requesting the test.

Most people have a small blood sample taken from an arm vein. Follow the instructions given by the clinic about food, medicines and supplements; do not stop thyroid medicine unless told to do so. Tell the clinician if you take biotin or another supplement, because it may affect some laboratory methods. Keep the result with the stated reference range and ask how it fits with TSH and T4. If symptoms such as fatigue, a fast heartbeat or bowel changes continue, mention their timing and pattern.

A blood-test result is not usually an emergency by itself. Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, new confusion or a sustained racing heartbeat. Contact the clinician who ordered the test if you feel markedly unwell, develop worsening weakness, or are pregnant and receive unexpected thyroid results, so the result can be interpreted promptly with the right clinical context.

Ask why T3 was requested; whether you need TSH and T4 as well; whether any medicine or supplement should be paused; when results will be reviewed; and which symptoms would change the next step.
