What should you know about T1 bladder cancer treatment?

T1 means tumour cells have moved through the inner lining into the connective tissue layer, without the stage label alone showing spread into the bladder muscle. The grade, number and size of tumours, whether they return, and the quality of the tissue sample all influence decisions.

A Cystoscopy lets the team inspect the bladder and remove or sample visible growths. The pathology report helps confirm depth and grade. T1 disease is different from muscle-invasive disease, so ask how confident the team is in the staging and whether another tissue assessment is needed.

Treatment may include removal of visible tumour through the urinary passage followed by medicine placed directly into the bladder, such as Intravesical BCG Therapy. Some people need further surgery or a wider treatment plan. Immunotherapy or Chemotherapy may be discussed in selected settings, while Bladder Removal Surgery is considered when the risk of deeper or returning disease makes it appropriate. Keep every cystoscopy and follow-up appointment.

Contact the care team urgently for heavy or persistent blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, fever or chills after bladder treatment, severe pelvic pain, or repeated vomiting. Difficulty Passing Urine with lower abdominal swelling can require prompt assessment. Seek emergency help for fainting, severe weakness, or uncontrolled bleeding.
