What should you know about syringoma what causes them?

Syringomas develop from an overgrowth of cells in the small sweat ducts near the skin surface. They are benign and are not caused by poor hygiene or a contagious infection. Some people have a family tendency, while others develop them without an identifiable trigger.

Syringomas commonly affect the lower eyelids and upper cheeks, where sweat glands are present. They can also occur on the forehead, chest, abdomen, or genital skin. Hormonal shifts may influence their appearance in some people, and certain inherited conditions can be associated with multiple lesions, but most individual syringomas have no single proven cause.

The bumps are usually smooth, firm, and close to the skin colour. Their pattern and slow change help a clinician assess them, but similar-looking bumps can have different causes.

A dermatologist can inspect the bumps and decide whether the appearance is typical or whether a sample is useful. Keep the area gently cleansed, avoid rubbing, and do not try to burn or cut the lesions at home. There is no reliable home method for reversing the sweat-duct growth.

If appearance is the main concern, ask about options such as CO2 laser resurfacing or electrosurgery. Treatment removes visible lesions but may not prevent new syringomas from forming, and delicate facial skin can develop temporary redness or lasting pigment changes.

Seek a prompt assessment if lesions multiply suddenly, become tender, bleed, crust, ulcerate, or change colour. A rapidly changing or atypical bump should not be assumed to be a syringoma. Get urgent care for swelling around the eye accompanied by pain or vision changes.
