What should you know about syringoma warts?

Syringomas are small, firm skin-coloured or slightly yellow bumps formed from sweat-duct cells. They often appear beneath the eyes or on the upper cheeks and may occur in clusters. Although their surface can make them look wart-like, syringomas are not caused by the wart virus and are not contagious.

A typical syringoma grows slowly and usually causes no pain. It may remain stable for a long time, though some people notice more bumps over time. Appearance alone cannot reliably distinguish a syringoma from milia, xanthelasma, sebaceous growths, or a wart, so examination matters before any treatment is chosen.

Syringomas are benign, but their position near the eyelids makes self-treatment risky. Picking, freezing, or applying wart products can irritate delicate skin and leave a mark.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain or the bumps bother you cosmetically. If removal is appropriate, options may include carefully selected energy treatment such as CO2 laser resurfacing or a procedure such as electrosurgery. These methods can require more than one treatment and may cause temporary redness, swelling, crusting, or pigment changes.

Do not squeeze the bumps or use over-the-counter wart treatments around the eyes. Take a clear photograph if the appearance changes, and tell the clinician about previous procedures, darker skin tones, and any tendency to form raised scars.

Book a prompt review for a bump that bleeds, ulcerates, becomes painful, changes quickly, develops unusual colour, or affects vision. These features are not typical of a straightforward syringoma and need direct examination. Seek urgent help for marked eyelid swelling with eye pain or sudden visual change.

Ask whether the bumps look like syringomas, whether a close examination or biopsy is needed, which treatment best fits their location, and how the clinician will protect the eyelid and reduce the chance of pigment or scarring changes.
