What should you know about syringoma causes and treatment?

A syringoma forms from cells associated with the sweat ducts. It often appears as a firm, skin-colored or slightly darker bump, commonly around the lower eyelids, although other areas can be involved. Several lesions may occur together, and they may stay stable for a long time. Hormonal or inherited tendencies may influence who develops them, but there is not always one identifiable cause.

Because milia, xanthelasma, warts, and other lesions can resemble syringoma, visual inspection is useful and a clinician may recommend further examination when the appearance is unusual. A diagnosis should not be inferred from a bump alone.

If syringomas are not bothersome, monitoring is a valid option. When they affect appearance, a dermatologist can discuss procedures that target the lesion, including electrosurgery or CO2 laser resurfacing. Choice depends on eyelid proximity, lesion depth, skin tone, number of bumps, and tolerance for downtime or temporary color change. Treatment may improve visibility without preventing new lesions from forming. Avoid squeezing, cutting, burning, or applying strong acids at home, particularly near the eyes.

Arrange a skin assessment if a bump changes rapidly, bleeds, becomes painful, ulcerates, or differs from the surrounding lesions. Seek urgent care for vision changes, severe eye pain, marked swelling, fever, or redness spreading around the eye. These features require prompt evaluation rather than cosmetic treatment planning.
