What should you know about syphilis test?

Some tests help show whether the body has reacted to syphilis, while others help estimate whether infection may be active or whether treatment is working. Very early testing can be negative before antibodies are detectable. A positive result may reflect current infection, past treated infection, or a result needing confirmation. The report should therefore be discussed with a clinician rather than read in isolation.

Tell the testing service the possible exposure date, symptoms, previous syphilis treatment, pregnancy status, and medicines. Ask when results will be available and whether repeat testing is needed. Until a clinician advises otherwise, avoid sexual contact if infection is suspected and inform partners if a diagnosis is confirmed. If treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and keep follow-up appointments.

Seek prompt assessment for a painless sore, a new rash involving the palms or soles, eye pain or vision change, hearing change, severe headache, or neurological symptoms. Do not wait for routine results if sudden vision loss, sudden weakness, severe confusion, or severe headache develops; seek emergency care.

Ask whether the test is appropriate for the timing of exposure, whether confirmation or repeat testing is needed, what a previous treatment history changes, and whether other STI tests or partner notification should be arranged.
