What should you know about how syphilis spreads?

The bacteria can pass when the mouth, genitals, anus, or other skin contacts an infectious sore or rash. Sores may be painless and can occur in places that are difficult to see. Transmission is possible even when the person carrying syphilis feels well. Syphilis can also pass from a pregnant person to a baby during pregnancy or birth.
