What should you know about syphilis spots?

A syphilis rash may appear during a later early phase of infection and can involve the trunk, limbs, palms, or soles. It may be subtle, widespread, or accompanied by mouth or genital changes, swollen glands, fever, or feeling unwell. Some people have very few skin symptoms, and the rash may fade without treatment even though infection remains. Many other conditions, including allergic reactions and common infections, can cause spots. A syphilis spot is therefore a presentation of syphilis, not proof that every unexplained spot is syphilis.

Pregnancy or possible exposure during pregnancy also calls for timely assessment.

Ask whether the spots fit a sexually transmitted infection, which tests you need, whether you should avoid sex while waiting, how partners will be supported, and whether eye, ear, or nerve symptoms change the treatment plan.
