What is a syphilis lab test?

The laboratory may use more than one type of blood test. Some tests look for antibodies that suggest current or past infection, while others help assess activity and response to treatment. A result is interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, previous treatment, and timing of possible exposure. Testing soon after exposure may not detect infection, so a clinician may recommend repeat testing. If a sore is present, a clinician may discuss whether a sample from it can add useful information.

Tell the clinician when the possible exposure occurred, whether you have had syphilis before, and whether you received treatment. Mention pregnancy, medicines, and any symptoms such as a sore, rash, or swollen glands. Follow the laboratory instructions and avoid sexual contact until you understand the next steps. A reactive result does not by itself show when infection began; the clinician will explain the findings and treatment plan.

Seek prompt assessment after a partner’s diagnosis or when you notice a painless sore or rash on the palms or soles. Request urgent care for vision changes, eye pain, hearing changes, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or balance problems. Pregnant people with a possible exposure should contact a clinician promptly, even without symptoms.
