Can syphilis be deadly?

Syphilis often begins with a painless sore or later rash, and these symptoms can disappear without treatment. The bacterium may then remain in the body. In some people, later disease affects the brain, nerves, eyes, ears, heart, or blood vessels. Severe complications are less common than early symptoms, but they can be serious and may develop after a quiet period.

Syphilis during pregnancy needs prompt attention because infection can pass to the unborn baby. A diagnosis is not a prediction of a fatal outcome; it is a reason to arrange testing and follow the treatment plan.

Arrange STI screening after a possible exposure, a partner's diagnosis, or symptoms such as a painless sore, unusual rash, swollen glands, or unexplained tiredness. Share pregnancy status and any immune-system conditions with the clinician.

If diagnosed, complete the prescribed antibiotic treatment and return for any requested checks. Do not use leftover medicine or stop because symptoms improve. Avoid sexual contact until your clinician explains when it is safe, and help recent partners access assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for severe headache, confusion, weakness, trouble walking, sudden vision changes, eye pain, new hearing loss, chest pain, or fainting. If you are pregnant and may have syphilis, contact a clinician promptly even if you feel well.
