What should you know about synthetic skin graft procedure?

Synthetic graft materials can act as a temporary cover, a structural scaffold, or a surface that supports the body's own wound healing. They are not interchangeable: some are intended for particular wound depths, locations, or stages of repair. The clinician first assesses wound size, depth, circulation, contamination, infection, and the surrounding skin.

A synthetic graft is different from a traditional Skin Graft, where tissue is taken from another part of the body. The choice may also depend on whether later reconstruction, dressing changes, or another procedure is expected. Healing can change the colour, texture, flexibility, and appearance of the treated area.

Ask which material will be used, whether it is temporary or intended to remain, and how it will be secured. Tell the team about diabetes, circulation problems, smoking, immune conditions, allergies, and medicines that affect bleeding or healing. Keep the dressing clean and dry as instructed, avoid picking or friction, and attend planned wound checks.

Contact the surgical team for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, foul-smelling drainage, wound separation, fever, or a dressing that becomes soaked or displaced. Urgent assessment is needed for severe bleeding, confusion, faintness, or rapidly worsening swelling. Do not remove or replace a secured dressing unless the care team tells you to.
