Symptoms of a viral stomach bug

Viral gastroenteritis irritates the stomach and bowel. Symptoms may arrive together or develop over several hours. Vomiting and diarrhoea can remove more fluid than you replace, leading to dehydration. A stomach bug can spread through contaminated hands, food or surfaces, so careful handwashing and avoiding food preparation for others while unwell can help limit spread.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting settles, try light foods such as toast, rice, bananas or soup, and return to your usual diet as tolerated. Rest, wash hands with soap and water, and clean bathroom surfaces. Avoid sharing towels, cups and utensils. Seek urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, feel faint or confused, pass very little urine, have blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or a high or persistent fever.
