Symptoms of viral labyrinthitis

The inner ear helps control balance and hearing. Inflammation there can make the brain receive mismatched movement signals, producing vertigo that may worsen when you turn your head. Dizziness, nausea, vomiting and unsteadiness are common experiences. Ear ringing or hearing change can occur, although a similar balance problem may affect the balance nerve without changing hearing.

Rest in a safe place during severe attacks, rise slowly, and avoid driving, heights, swimming alone and machinery while balance is impaired. Take fluids in small sips if nausea is present. A GP consultation can review medicines and decide whether short-term symptom relief or balance rehabilitation is appropriate. Do not stay in bed for longer than advised once movement is safe.

Seek emergency help for new weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, fainting, severe headache, double vision, chest pain or inability to walk. Sudden hearing loss, persistent vomiting, or a first severe vertigo attack also needs prompt medical assessment. Avoid assuming that a new neurological symptom is part of an ear infection.
