Symptoms of Spotting After Your Period

A small amount of pink, red, or brown blood may appear as hormones shift around ovulation or after a change in contraception. Infection such as chlamydia can cause bleeding, especially with pelvic pain, unusual discharge, or pain during sex. Polyps and fibroids can also bleed. Less commonly, cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer may present with unusual bleeding; spotting does not establish either diagnosis, and most causes are not cancer.

Bleeding after sex, repeated spotting, bleeding after menopause, or a change from your usual pattern deserves assessment. Pregnancy should also be considered when relevant.

Record when spotting starts, how long it lasts, its colour and amount, whether it follows sex, and any pain or discharge. Arrange a clinician review for repeated or unexplained episodes. Assessment may include a pregnancy test, examination, infection testing, cervical screening review, or imaging depending on your history. Do not use leftover antibiotics or delay care because the bleeding is light.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Prompt review is also needed for bleeding after menopause or bleeding that follows sex repeatedly. Emergency assessment is guided by the amount of bleeding and associated symptoms, not by the likelihood of a particular diagnosis.
