Symptoms of a missed miscarriage at 7 weeks

A missed miscarriage means a pregnancy has stopped developing but the body has not yet passed the pregnancy tissue. Some people still feel pregnant, while others notice reduced nausea, breast tenderness, or fatigue. Light spotting or mild cramps can occur, but their absence does not confirm that everything is progressing. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose a miscarriage; ultrasound and sometimes repeat testing are used to clarify the pregnancy’s development.

Contact your maternity or gynaecology service if you are worried about symptoms or have had a scan with uncertain findings. Keep any scheduled follow-up, because an early scan may need repeating when the dates are unclear. Use pads rather than tampons if bleeding starts, and note its amount, colour, clots, and any pain. If a missed miscarriage is confirmed, discuss waiting for the body to pass the tissue, medical management, or surgical management; the suitable choice depends on your symptoms, scan findings, health, and preferences.

Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, severe dizziness, fever, unpleasant-smelling discharge, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These signs may point to significant blood loss, ectopic pregnancy, or infection and should not wait for a routine appointment. Emotional distress after a suspected or confirmed loss also deserves prompt support from your care team.

Ask how the diagnosis was established, whether another ultrasound is needed, and what changes should prompt urgent review. If the loss is confirmed, ask how each management option works, what bleeding and pain to expect, and when follow-up will occur.
