Symptoms of lung cancer spread to bones

When lung cancer cells reach bone, they can weaken its structure and cause pain that persists at rest or disturbs sleep. The spine, ribs, pelvis, and limbs may be affected. High calcium in the blood can cause thirst, frequent urination, constipation, nausea, abdominal discomfort, drowsiness, or confusion. Back pain with leg weakness or changes in bladder or bowel control may indicate pressure on the spinal cord. These symptoms have other possible causes, so assessment is needed rather than assuming spread.

Tell the oncology team about new or worsening bone pain, reduced movement, a fall, or pain that limits sleep or daily activity. Tests may include examination and scans, with blood tests when high calcium is suspected. Treatment plans can combine pain relief, radiotherapy to a painful area, medicines that support bone strength, and treatment directed at the lung cancer. Genomic tumour profiling may help identify treatment information in some cases. Palliative care can support comfort alongside cancer treatment.

Seek emergency care for sudden severe back pain, new leg weakness or numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Urgent help is also needed for confusion, extreme drowsiness, repeated vomiting, or a suspected fracture after a minor injury. Do not massage or force movement through severe pain before a fracture or spinal problem has been assessed.

Ask which bone is affected, whether the spine is at risk, what scan or blood test is planned, and how to protect mobility. Clarify safe activity, pain medicines, warning signs between appointments, and whether radiotherapy or bone-directed treatment is appropriate.
