Symptoms of kidney cancer in females

Kidney cancer may cause visible or microscopic blood in urine, discomfort in the side or lower back, or a mass that can be felt in the abdomen. Some people develop tiredness, reduced appetite, fever that is not explained by an infection, night sweating, or unintentional weight loss. High blood pressure or changes in blood tests may also be found during assessment. Urinary infection, stones, cysts, medication effects, and other conditions can cause similar findings, so a symptom does not identify its cause.

Arrange a clinical review for blood in the urine, persistent side pain, or a new lump, even if the symptom settles. Note urine colour, pain location, fever, urinary changes, medicines, and family history. Assessment may include urine and blood tests plus imaging. Seek urgent help for heavy blood in the urine with clots, inability to pass urine, severe flank pain with vomiting, fainting, confusion, or fever with shaking chills. The urgency comes from the symptom and the risk of complications, not from assuming that it represents cancer.

Ask which tests will distinguish infection, stones, cysts, and a tumour, and whether imaging requires contrast. If a mass is found, ask how kidney function will be protected, whether surgery or ablation is suitable, and whether tumour features could guide immunotherapy or targeted treatment.
