Symptoms of hyperthyroidism after thyroidectomy

Thyroidectomy changes how thyroid hormone is supplied and monitored. Symptoms resembling [Hyperthyroidism](/conditions/hyperthyroidism/) may occur if hormone replacement is too strong, if thyroid tissue remains active, or during a temporary shift while treatment is being adjusted. A fast heartbeat, tremor, anxiety, increased sweating, heat intolerance, frequent bowel movements, and [Difficulty Sleeping](/symptoms/difficulty-sleeping/) can fit an overactive-thyroid pattern, but stress, infection, medicines, and recovery can cause similar sensations.

Contact your thyroid or surgical team if these symptoms are new, persistent, or worsening. Do not change or stop thyroid replacement without instructions. The clinician may review the dose, timing, other medicines, pulse, wound recovery, and thyroid blood tests. Keep a record of palpitations, [Excessive Sweating](/symptoms/excessive-sweating/), bowel changes, sleep, and any dose changes so the pattern is clear. Take medicines as prescribed and attend planned blood-test appointments.

Seek emergency help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, a very fast or irregular heartbeat with weakness, new confusion, or a high fever with agitation.
