Why heat stroke is dangerous
Heat stroke occurs when the body cannot control its temperature and brain function becomes affected. Sweating may be heavy, reduced or absent, so sweating does not rule it out. A person can become disoriented, drowsy, unsteady or unable to respond normally. Heat exhaustion can precede it, but heat stroke can also develop quickly during intense heat or exertion.
Act while help is coming
Call emergency services immediately. Move the person to shade or air conditioning, remove outer clothing and cool them with wet cloths, fanning or cool water. Place an unconscious person on their side and watch their breathing. Do not give food or drink to anyone confused, drowsy or unable to swallow safely.
When emergency care is needed
Every suspected heat stroke episode needs emergency assessment, even if the person begins to look better. Emergency clinicians may use active cooling, monitoring and IV fluid therapy when appropriate. Do not drive an unstable or unconscious person yourself; follow the emergency dispatcher’s instructions.
