Symptoms of dengue fever in adults

Dengue is a viral illness spread by infected mosquitoes. Fever may begin abruptly and can occur with a strong headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, nausea or a skin rash. Dengue fever can resemble other infections, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A small amount of bleeding from the nose or gums, easy bruising, or blood in vomit or stool is a warning sign. Symptoms can change as the fever settles, so feeling cooler does not always mean the illness is over.

Rest, drink fluids regularly and record your temperature and symptoms. Use only medicines recommended by a clinician or pharmacist; avoid aspirin and ibuprofen until dengue has been assessed because they may increase bleeding risk. Limit mosquito exposure with repellent, covered clothing and screens so mosquitoes are less likely to spread infection onward.

Arrange a GP Consultation if dengue is possible, especially after travel or mosquito exposure in an area where dengue occurs. Bring a list of medicines and the date your fever started.

Seek urgent medical care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness or restlessness, fainting, cold or clammy skin, or any bleeding. Go promptly if you cannot keep fluids down or pass much less urine. A clinician may need to monitor you closely even when the fever begins to improve.

Ask whether your symptoms fit dengue or another infection, whether testing is appropriate now, which pain reliever is suitable, how much fluid to take, and which changes should trigger emergency care.
