Symptoms of congestive heart failure in women

Symptoms can be subtle at first and may be mistaken for stress, poor sleep, menopause-related changes, or being out of condition. Breathlessness during ordinary activity, difficulty lying flat, waking short of breath, ankle swelling, persistent cough, or marked fatigue deserves attention. Some women experience palpitations or digestive discomfort alongside breathlessness. Hypertension and atrial fibrillation are among the conditions a clinician may consider. A symptom does not by itself establish heart failure.

Contact a clinician when a new pattern persists, progresses, or limits work, walking, sleep, or household activities. Note the timing of symptoms, whether they change with position, swelling in both legs or one, palpitations, and any recent illness or medicine change. Bring the list to a chronic disease review. Do not stop prescribed medicines or assume breathlessness is a normal part of ageing or hormonal change.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, or a rapid irregular heartbeat with weakness. Seek same-day care if swelling or breathlessness is worsening quickly, if you cannot lie flat comfortably, or if you repeatedly wake gasping for air. Pregnancy or the period after delivery makes new breathlessness or swelling especially important to assess promptly.
