Symptoms of a Sty

A sty, also called a hordeolum, often starts as a sensitive spot near an eyelash. The eyelid may become puffy, warm, and painful when touched. A small yellow point can appear as inflammation collects near the lash line. Blinking may feel uncomfortable, but vision should generally remain clear. A more diffuse red eye, marked light sensitivity, or pain inside the eye is not typical of a simple sty and needs assessment.

Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating it through the day. Wash your hands before and after touching the area, and keep the eyelid gently clean. Avoid squeezing or piercing the lump. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the eyelid has settled, and do not share towels, cosmetics, or washcloths.

Arrange a GP Consultation if the swelling is spreading, the pain is increasing, the lump does not settle, or you keep getting styes. Seek urgent eye care for reduced vision, severe eye pain, pain with eye movement, major light sensitivity, fever, or swelling around the whole eye. These features can indicate a problem beyond the eyelid margin.

Ask whether the lump is a sty or another eyelid problem, how long to continue warm compresses, and whether recurring episodes suggest eyelid inflammation or another trigger. Mention any Eye Discharge, Red Eye, contact lens use, or change in vision.
