What should you know about Symphony flow cytometry?

Short answer

Symphony flow cytometry analyses identifying features on individual cells so specialists can classify cell populations in a blood, marrow, or other sample.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test does

Flow cytometry passes cells through an instrument that detects light and fluorescent signals. Laboratory markers attach to selected features on the cells, allowing the analyser to compare groups and identify patterns. This can help distinguish types of immune or blood-forming cells and support the assessment of some blood cancers or immune disorders.

A result is interpreted with symptoms, examination findings, blood counts, imaging, and sometimes tissue findings. It is not a stand-alone prediction of how an illness will behave. The word Symphony may refer to the laboratory platform or workflow; ask the testing team what was measured in your sample.

What to do before and after

Ask whether your sample will come from blood, a body fluid, or a bone marrow sample, and whether any preparation is required. If a bone marrow biopsy is planned, request a clear explanation of the procedure, pain control, and result timeline. Keep your appointment details and share medicines or conditions that could affect sampling.

When to seek care

Flow cytometry itself does not usually create symptoms; seek advice about the sample site if you develop persistent bleeding, increasing redness, swelling, fever, severe pain, or feeling faint after collection. Contact the clinical team promptly if you are unsure how to respond to a result or if your symptoms worsen.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which cell markers were assessed, what question the test was intended to answer, and whether another sample or test is needed. Ask who will explain the report, how it fits with your blood count or marrow findings, and when the next decision will be discussed.

Questions people ask

Is flow cytometry a treatment?

No. It is a laboratory analysis used to examine cell populations and support diagnosis or classification.

Does an abnormal result prove cancer?

No. Results describe cell patterns and must be interpreted with other tests and the clinical picture.
