What should you know about symphion hysteroscope?

Hysteroscopy passes a narrow scope through the vagina and cervix, so the clinician can inspect the uterine cavity without an abdominal incision. A Symphion system may be used during operative hysteroscopy, where instruments can remove or treat tissue under direct vision. The exact equipment and procedure depend on the finding, your symptoms, pregnancy plans and the clinician’s assessment.

It may help investigate abnormal bleeding or an ultrasound finding such as a polyp. It is different from a routine pelvic examination, and it is not suitable for every situation. Your clinician will explain whether a diagnostic hysteroscopy is enough or whether treatment is planned at the same sitting.

Ask which type of anaesthesia or pain relief is planned, whether you need to avoid food or drink beforehand, and how long you should allow for recovery. Tell the team about pregnancy possibility, allergies, medicines that affect bleeding, and previous reactions to anaesthesia. If tissue removal or treatment is planned, ask whether a sample will be sent for assessment and when results are expected.

The procedure may be used alongside treatments such as hysteroscopic polypectomy or endometrial ablation, but these are separate decisions. Arrange transport if sedation or anaesthesia is used, and follow the discharge advice about activity, bathing and vaginal bleeding.

Contact your care team promptly after hysteroscopy if bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe or worsening, you develop fever, feel faint, or notice foul-smelling discharge. Seek urgent help for collapse, breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening illness. Before the procedure, report a positive pregnancy test, new infection symptoms or unexpected heavy bleeding so the appointment can be reviewed safely.
