Swollen Upper Lip From an Allergy: What to Know

Possible triggers include foods, medicines, cosmetics, toothpaste, lip products, latex, and ingredients in personal-care products. Symptoms may begin soon after contact, but timing varies. Itching, raised hives, flushing, sneezing, vomiting, or swelling of the eyelids can support an allergic explanation. A swollen upper lip does not prove that an allergy is the cause; irritation, injury, dental problems, infection, and angioedema can look similar.

Do not wait to see whether lip swelling settles when these symptoms occur. Seek same-day assessment for fast-spreading swelling, widespread hives, or a reaction after a new medicine. Recurrent isolated swelling still deserves a medical review.
