What should you know about swollen peeling lips?

Peeling may occur when the lip surface is dry, chapped, sun-exposed, or repeatedly irritated by licking, biting, cosmetics, toothpaste, or a new lip product. Swelling adds inflammation and can also occur with a contact allergy, a cold sore, an infection, or angioedema. A condition such as angioedema presents with deeper swelling of the lips and may occur with itchy hives, although hives are not always present.

Note when the change began, whether one or both lips are affected, and whether there is itching, burning, blistering, crusting, discharge, fever, or swelling elsewhere. Those details help a clinician distinguish surface irritation from a deeper reaction.

Stop any newly introduced lip balm, lipstick, gloss, toothpaste, mouthwash, or food that seems connected to the episode. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, avoid scrubbing or peeling loose skin, and apply a plain fragrance-free ointment to protect the surface. Cool compresses may ease discomfort. Do not apply a steroid, antibiotic, or numbing product to the lips unless a clinician has advised it.

Arrange medical advice if the swelling persists, keeps returning, becomes painful, or develops blisters, pus, spreading redness, or fever. Take a photo and keep the product packaging if a reaction may be involved.

Seek emergency help immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, trouble swallowing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. These signs can accompany a serious allergic reaction. A clinician should also assess marked one-sided swelling, severe pain, fever, or a rapidly spreading rash.

Ask whether the pattern fits contact dermatitis, angioedema, infection, or another cause; which products should be avoided; whether any medicine is appropriate; and what symptoms should trigger emergency care.
