Swollen lips with tiny blisters

Grouped tiny blisters on or near the lip, especially after tingling, burning, or tenderness, are a pattern a clinician may recognise as a cold sore. Cracks, contact irritation, or a reaction to a product can also produce small bumps or bubbles. Blisters inside the mouth may have different causes. If swelling is deep, develops quickly, or involves the tongue, eyelids, or throat, angioedema is another concern; see [Angioedema](/conditions/angioedema/). Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Do not pop or peel the blisters. Wash your hands after touching your mouth, avoid kissing and oral contact while sores are active, and do not share cups, utensils, towels, or lip products. Clean gently and apply a plain protective ointment if the surface is cracked. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antiviral or pain-relief option is appropriate; avoid using someone else’s medicine. Seek an appointment if this is the first episode, the diagnosis is uncertain, or lesions keep returning.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, trouble swallowing, or quickly increasing facial swelling. Obtain prompt medical assessment for eye pain or eye-area sores, spreading redness, pus, severe pain, fever, inability to drink, or a weakened immune system. Young infants need early medical advice after contact with active mouth blisters.

Ask whether the blisters look like a cold sore or another condition, whether a swab or examination is needed, and how long to avoid close contact. Mention tingling, previous episodes, fever, medicines, pregnancy, and any eye symptoms.
