Swollen Lips After Braces: Causes and Care

A new bracket or wire can press against the inner lip and create a sore, scrape or small ulcer. Saliva, food residue and repeated friction can keep the area irritated. Swelling may also follow an adjustment when the mouth is adapting to new pressure. Pus, worsening pain, bad taste, fever or swelling near a tooth suggests infection rather than simple rubbing. Sudden swelling of both lips, especially with hives, can reflect angioedema.

Rinse gently with water after meals and keep the area clean. Orthodontic wax can cover a sharp bracket or wire when used as directed by your orthodontic team. Choose soft, cool foods while the sore settles and avoid picking the area or using strong mouth products. Contact the orthodontist if a wire is poking, a bracket is loose, or the swelling is not easing. Do not cut wires at home unless your orthodontist gives specific instructions.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, tongue or throat swelling, faintness, or trouble swallowing. Seek prompt dental care for fever, pus, spreading facial redness, severe tooth pain, or inability to open the mouth. A cut that keeps bleeding, rapidly enlarging swelling, or swelling after a new dental material also warrants urgent advice.

Ask whether a bracket or wire is causing the injury, how to protect the sore, and whether the appliance needs adjustment. Tell them when the braces were fitted or tightened, whether there is pus or fever, and which mouth rinses or medicines you have tried.
