Swollen lip after filling: what to know

Needling and the filler itself can trigger temporary inflammation, tenderness, bruising, and uneven swelling. The lips may look fuller while the treated tissue settles. A delayed flare can occur after illness, dental work, or irritation in some people. However, marked pain, skin that becomes pale, dusky, or mottled, blisters, or swelling that is rapidly worsening may indicate a blood-flow problem or another complication. An itchy rash, facial swelling beyond the treated area, or breathing symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction.

Follow the injector's aftercare instructions and contact that provider when the swelling pattern changes. Use a cool compress wrapped in cloth, keep your head raised when resting, and avoid pressing, massaging, or applying heat unless your injector specifically advises it. Avoid strenuous activity, alcohol, and irritating lip products while the area is tender. Do not take or apply medicines to dissolve filler unless prescribed or directed by a qualified clinician.

Contact the injector urgently for severe or escalating pain, pale or darkening skin, unusual coolness, blisters, or a patchy colour change. Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, tongue or throat swelling, faintness, or sudden vision change. Fever, spreading redness, pus, or increasing warmth also needs prompt review.
