Swollen hands during pregnancy at night: what to know

Pregnancy changes circulation and fluid handling, and swelling may be more noticeable after a day spent upright. Warm rooms, salty foods, tight rings, and sleeping with the arms in one position can make fingers feel fuller. Tingling or numbness at night may also occur when swelling puts pressure around the wrist, sometimes resembling carpal tunnel symptoms.

Gradual, mild swelling is not the same pattern as a sudden increase in the hands, face, or feet. Pregnancy-related high blood pressure disorders can present with swelling alongside headache, visual disturbance, pain below the ribs, nausea, or feeling unusually unwell. Hand swelling itself does not establish a diagnosis.

Remove rings before bed, keep the room cool, and rest with the hands supported rather than tucked tightly under the body. Gentle finger movement and changing position can reduce stiffness. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, drink normally unless your maternity team has given different instructions, and mention recurring numbness or grip difficulty at your next visit. Do not take water tablets or new medicines without pregnancy-specific advice.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for sudden or rapidly increasing swelling, especially in the face or hands, or for a severe headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, pain under the ribs, vomiting, breathlessness, or feeling very unwell. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, or a cold, blue, very painful hand. New one-sided painful swelling also needs assessment.
