Swollen Finger Joint in the Morning: What It Can Mean

Short answer
A swollen finger joint in the morning may come from inflammation, arthritis, fluid retention, or a recent injury; persistent, painful, hot, or repeatedly swollen joints deserve medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What morning swelling can mean
Stiffness and puffiness after sleep often reflect inflammation that becomes more noticeable when the hand has been still. Rheumatoid Arthritis commonly presents with swollen, stiff finger joints and may affect matching joints on both hands. Psoriatic Arthritis can involve whole fingers, nail changes, or patches of psoriasis. Osteoarthritis more often causes pain and stiffness in particular finger joints, especially after use, although morning symptoms can occur.
A sudden, very tender, red or warm joint can occur with crystal arthritis such as Gout or Pseudogout. A knock, strain, repetitive gripping, or a small skin wound can also produce local swelling. Note whether one or several joints are affected, how long stiffness lasts after waking, and whether redness, heat, fever, rash, or nail changes accompany it.
What you can do now
Remove tight rings before swelling increases. Rest the hand from forceful gripping, but gently move the finger through a comfortable range so it does not remain still all day. Elevating the hand and using a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods may ease puffiness. Do not apply ice directly to skin or force a stiff joint.
Keep a brief record of affected joints, morning stiffness, triggers, injuries, skin symptoms, and medicines. A clinician may examine the hand and consider blood tests or imaging based on the pattern. Anti-Inflammatory Medication may be appropriate for some people, but kidney disease, stomach ulcers, pregnancy, blood thinners, and other conditions can change what is safe.
When to seek care
Arrange an appointment if swelling keeps returning, lasts beyond a short period, limits bending or straightening, or comes with prolonged morning stiffness. Seek prompt medical care for a joint that becomes suddenly hot, red, severely painful, or difficult to move, particularly if you also feel feverish or unwell. Get urgent help after a significant injury when the finger looks crooked, feels numb, or changes colour.
Early assessment helps distinguish a local hand problem from inflammation affecting more than one joint. Treatment may include activity changes, hand therapy, medicine, or—when clinically suitable—a Cortisone Injection; the choice depends on the examination and suspected cause.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Which joint is swollen, and does the pattern suggest inflammation, wear, crystals, or injury? How long should morning stiffness be monitored? Would an examination, imaging, or blood test clarify the cause? Which hand movements are helpful while it settles, and which should be avoided?

Questions people ask
Why is my finger joint more swollen after sleep?
Inactivity can make inflammation and stiffness more noticeable on waking. The pattern, duration, and other symptoms help identify the cause.
Should I move a swollen finger joint?
Gentle, comfortable movement is usually preferable to forcing the joint or keeping it completely still. Stop if movement sharply increases pain.
When is a swollen finger joint urgent?
Prompt care is appropriate for sudden hot, red, severely painful swelling, fever or feeling unwell, or a finger that is crooked, numb, or discoloured after injury.
