Swollen eyes and lips with itchy skin: what to know

Itching often reflects inflammation in the skin. Swelling around the eyes or lips may occur with hives or angioedema, after contact with a new product, or during an eczema flare. A reaction can follow food, medicine, cosmetics, hair dye, detergent, or an insect sting. The appearance alone cannot identify the trigger.

Look for timing and distribution: a sudden episode after an exposure differs from dry, cracked, recurring itch. Scabies tends to cause marked itch with a pattern that may affect household contacts, while psoriasis and dermatitis usually have visible patches or scale. A clinician can examine the skin and review recent exposures.

Stop any newly introduced skin, hair, or cosmetic product and avoid rubbing the swollen areas. Use a cool, clean compress for short periods. Keep a note of foods, medicines, stings, and products used before the episode, including when symptoms began. Do not apply strong creams near the eyes unless a clinician has advised it.

If symptoms are mild and improving, arrange medical advice to identify the trigger, especially if episodes recur. A clinician may discuss an antihistamine or another treatment after checking your age, pregnancy status, other medicines, and medical history.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the tongue. Rapidly worsening facial swelling also warrants urgent assessment. Seek same-day care if the eye is painful, vision changes, the skin becomes hot and tender, or fever develops.
