Swollen bumps on lips: what they may mean and what to do

A single tender bump may follow biting, friction, a spot-like blocked pore, or a small injury. Several itchy bumps or swelling that appears soon after a food, medicine, lip product, or dental material can fit an allergic response. Tingling followed by clustered fluid-filled blisters may suggest a cold sore. A warm, increasingly painful area with pus or spreading redness needs medical assessment. Angioedema is a condition that can cause deeper swelling of the lips, sometimes with swelling elsewhere.

Notice when it began, whether the bumps are inside or outside the mouth, and whether the change is spreading. A clear photo can help a clinician compare the area over time.

Stop any newly introduced lip balm, cosmetic, toothpaste, food, or medicine until a clinician helps identify the trigger. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, avoid squeezing or picking, and use a cool clean compress for short periods. Keep the lips protected from licking and harsh products. Do not apply steroid, antibiotic, or numbing cream inside the mouth unless prescribed. Arrange a medical review if the bumps persist, recur, become painful, or interfere with eating.

Seek emergency help immediately if lip swelling is accompanied by trouble breathing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, wheezing, or difficulty swallowing. Get prompt medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, fever, severe pain, spreading redness, pus, eye involvement, or inability to drink. These warning signs need attention because swelling or infection can progress even when the original bump looked small.

Ask whether the appearance fits an allergy, cold sore, irritation, blocked gland, or infection; whether any recent product or medicine could be involved; what symptoms should trigger urgent help; and whether testing or treatment is needed if the swelling returns.
