Swollen, Bleeding Lips: What to Know

Dryness or accidental biting can split the lip and cause visible bleeding with local swelling. Repeated licking, cosmetics, dental products, sores, or infection can keep the area inflamed. Sudden swelling after a food, medicine, sting, or product can occur with Angioedema. Bleeding that starts without an obvious break, returns often, or comes with easy bruising needs a clinician's review.

Wash your hands, then hold clean gauze or a soft cloth against the area with steady pressure until bleeding stops. Use a cool compress wrapped in cloth for swelling. Do not peel a scab, scrub the wound, or use alcohol or fragranced balm. Avoid foods that sting the area and keep track of any new medicine or product exposure.

Get urgent help if bleeding does not stop with firm pressure, the cut is deep or gaping, swelling spreads quickly, or you have fever, severe pain, pus, or facial redness. Call emergency services for tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, faintness, or widespread hives. Arrange review for unexplained or repeated bleeding.
