Swelling Around the Lips: What to Know

The pattern matters. Red, sore skin around the mouth can follow saliva, cosmetics, toothpaste, or another irritant. Sudden swelling after food, medicine, an insect sting, or a new product can be part of Angioedema. Pain, warmth, crusting, blisters, or fever may suggest inflammation or infection. A clinician may need to examine the lips and mouth to separate these causes.

Stop any newly introduced lip, dental, or facial product and rinse gently with lukewarm water. Avoid picking, licking, or applying fragranced products. A cool clean compress can ease discomfort. Photograph the swelling and write down recent foods, medicines, stings, and products; this can help a clinician identify a trigger. Do not take a medicine you have not been advised to use.

Call emergency services immediately if swelling involves the tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, feel faint, or develop widespread hives. Arrange prompt medical review if swelling is rapidly worsening, painful, associated with fever, or does not settle after removing a suspected trigger. Recurrent episodes also deserve assessment.
