Swimmer's ear and vinegar: safety questions answered

The outer ear canal can become inflamed after moisture or minor trauma. Acidifying drops are sometimes discussed for prevention after swimming, but prevention is different from treating an established infection. Burning, pain, discharge, a blocked sensation, or hearing change suggests that the canal may already be irritated or swollen. Vinegar cannot identify the cause, and a home mixture can be harmful if it reaches a damaged eardrum or sensitive tissue.

Do not put vinegar or other homemade liquid into an ear with pain, discharge, tubes, a known eardrum hole, recent surgery, or uncertain ear history. Keep water out, allow the ear to drain, and avoid probing it. If symptoms have started, arrange an examination so the canal and eardrum can be checked. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a licensed product is appropriate and can prescribe treatment when infection or substantial inflammation is present.

Get medical advice for persistent pain, worsening tenderness, discharge, swelling, or reduced hearing. Seek urgent help for spreading redness, severe pain, fever with marked illness, facial weakness, dizziness, or a severe headache. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or previous ear surgery should obtain advice early, even when symptoms seem limited.
